Mealtime Masterpieces

Everyone knows that kids love playing with their food, so why shouldn’t mealtimes be an opportunity to get creative? It can be difficult at the best of times to get kids to sit still at the table for any length of time, and anything which encourages them to take an interest in their food can only be good.

Food has always offered opportunities for creativity, and making it look especially good is definitely an art in itself. I’ve seen some wonderfully creative meals prepared for children, ranging from packed lunch ideas, to main meals – not to mention celebration cakes of course.

Recipes and food ideas are really beyond the remit of this blog, but when I came across these products the other day which are aimed at helping to entertain kids with some creative activities at the dinner table I thought they were great products to add to the range of products available at Artful Kids. I know I’d have loved them all as a child.

First up are these fun ‘Food Face’ plates – a simple idea, available in both girl and boy versions, it allows children to use their food to create funny faces. Having kept a couple of these for my boys, I think I have almost as fun as they do when putting their meals out these days!

Of course keeping the kids entertained when eating out can also be a problem – some restaurants will do their best to provide resources for the kids to use, but I also loved these pads of placemats which would do the same trick.  Mealtime Masterpieces is a pad of 48 draw and dine paper placemats with a set of 6 colouring pens included. Measuring 37 x 29cms, the printed frame means that each finished masterpiece will look good on the wall when completed. I think that these would work well at the table for parties too.

mealtime-masterpiece2Also in the form of a pad of paper placemats, Food & Fold – after dinner Origami  again contains 48 sheets, but this time there are 4 different designs, graded for difficulty and complete with instructions, that help you create  a collection of origami animals. Printed with food-safe inks, the pad measures 41 x 28cms.

food-and-fold-origamiIt’s been a while since I last did a giveaway, so I am offering one lucky winner the chance to win a pack of Mealtime Masterpiece mats (sorry, UK only because they are quite large to post). As you know, I hate making people jump through hoops to take part in anything, so all you have to do is leave a comment below to be in with a chance of winning. I don’t usually get many entries for this kind of thing, so you stand a good chance!! Closing date for this is 20th October, and the winner will be selected by random number.

I know where you’re coming from with the plates – there’s a part of me that feels the same, especially the ‘foods for eating, not playing with’ part, but then the child in me just loves them!
